The Poor Pooper: A Natural Approach to Constipation in a Child

Constipation is a very common issue in children. Constipation in children is passing hard stools with difficulty and with less frequency than normal. Many parents get stressed out if their child is not pooping as much as other children. While every child is different, there could be an underlying cause of your child’s constipation. In this article I will discuss some natural strategies that you can implement to help your child poop more regularly.

Diet can be a big contributor to constipation in children. If you child is constipated, try cutting out the following foods:

  • Bananas
  • Dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt)
  • Fried Foods
  • Processed Foods
  • Fast Food
  • White Flour

While cutting out these foods can help, also adding foods high in fiber can be beneficial to getting things moving for your child. Here are some foods that you can feed your child to help relieve constipation:

  • Dried fruit
  • Popcorn
  • Beans
  • High fiber cereal
  • Nuts
  • Apples, plums, and pears
  • Prunes

Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Care

If you have tried altering your child’s diet and have not seen any noticeable changes in your child’s bowel movements, then neuro-structural chiropractic care should be the next step. From a structural standpoint, when the lower back and/or tailbone shift from their normal alignment, it causes the muscles in the area to become tight. The GI System functions like a muscle to move the fecal matter through the digestive system. Tight muscles can prevent everything from moving properly.

From a neurological standpoint, nerves that exit your lower spine and supply the digestive organs can be obstructed if the spine shifts from its normal alignment. This affects the function of those nerves. As a Neuro-Structural Chiropractor, I focus on getting the structure of the spine in alignment and making sure that the nerves are functioning properly.

If you are tired of your child having to take miralax everyday just to poop or if you have tried everything with no luck, then I suggest that you try neuro-structural chiropractic care for your child. It is safe and very effective for the poor poopers. Our care is very gentle and doesn’t involve any forceful manipulation.

3 Simple Strategies to Naturally Lower Blood Pressure

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, affects millions of Americans. It costs the United States $46 billion each year. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 American adults have prehypertension. This means blood pressure levels are higher than the normal levels, but not yet in the high blood pressure range. The good news is that if you have high blood pressure, over 85 percent of high blood pressure cases can be normalized by lifestyle changes. In this article I will give you 3 simple strategies to naturally lower your blood pressure.

  1. Meditate Daily

Stress is one of the biggest contributors to high blood pressure. In our society, many of us live very stressful day to day lives. Stress on the body can be a good thing when it is short term, but long term stress can be very detrimental to our bodies.

Daily meditation reduces stress levels and can help lower your blood pressure to normal levels. I recommend meditating for 10-15 minutes each morning. Listen to calm/soothing music and close your eyes. Focus on your breathing, but don’t worry if your mind wanders. This will happen and does not mean you aren’t doing it correctly. As you meditate more often, you will be able to control your thoughts better.

  1. Drink more water

Substituting water for sugary and calorie filled drinks will dramatically help you lower your blood pressure. Water is needed by our bodies to perform all of the cellular processes. As Americans, we drink very little water and instead drink sugary, caffeinated drinks. This dehydrates our bodies and makes us have more sugar cravings.

Also, dehydration will cause your body to hold onto excess sodium. This can shut down your capillaries and put extra pressure on your arteries. These two things will raise your blood pressure.

I recommend getting a yeti insulated tumbler or any other insulated tumbler. Keep this full of water at all times. Once you run out, refill it and continue drinking throughout the day. This is a strategy that has worked wonders for me. This will make sure that you are getting plenty of water throughout the day.

  1. Get more direct sunlight

Vitamin D levels can have a very powerful effect on normalizing your blood pressure levels. Low vitamin D levels are associated with heart disease. You can increase your levels of vitamin D by getting direct sunlight or taking a supplement.

Since we live in Florida, the best way is to take advantage of the year round sunshine. This will make sure that you are getting adequate vitamin D and will also help decrease your stress levels. Being outdoors dramatically decreases stress by getting your mind off of work and getting fresh air/oxygen.

I recommend at 3 20 minute direct sunlight sessions per week. This should give most people adequate sunlight exposure to produce enough vitamin D.

These are just 3 strategies to naturally lower blood pressure. The 3 are very simple and can be incorporated without much work and/or struggle. Obviously, diet changes and exercise are two very powerful ways to lower blood pressure. Those two tend to be more difficult things to incorporate for people.

I hope that you found a lot of value in this article. If you did, please share it with your friends and family members. By sharing educational information and building awareness, we can help create a healthier community!

Stop Skipping Breakfast and Try This 5 Minute Breakfast Idea

Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition did a study of over 12,000 people and found that those individuals that reported eating breakfast had an overall decreased energy density for the day, a lower BMI, and a higher diet quality.  A recent survey concluded that about 10% of Americans skip breakfast. Here is a quick, easy, and highly nutritious breakfast that you can make in under 5 minutes:

Ingredients: Power Packed Smoothie

  1. Protein Powder

Protein is the primary building material throughout the body, especially muscle tissue. I recommend a basic whey protein or a plant based protein. Look for a clean protein that doesn’t have a lot of fillers and added sugar.

  1. Green Veggies

Incorporating green vegetables will provide you with a healthy dose of fiber and vitamins to help with digestive health. I recommend using either Spinach or Kale. You can even get a spinach and kale 50/50 blend.

  1. Ceylon (cinnamon)

Most cinnamon sold in the USA is cassia cinnamon, which is Chinese Cinnamon. Ceylon comes Sri Lanka and is a bit more expensive but totally worth it. Ceylon cinnamon stabilizes your blood sugar levels, helps with controlling body weight, and has antioxidants called proanthocyanadins.

  1. Raw Organic Vanilla Powder

This not only adds flavor to your smoothie, but is also a very powerful anti-inflammatory.

  1. MCT Oil

MCT Oil is basically broken down coconut oil that is liquid at room temperature. MCT Oil helps you maintain a healthy weight, reduce stored body fat, have more energy, think more clearly, better digestion, balance hormones, improve mood, increase immune function, and absorb fat-soluble nutrients. MCT oil has gotten the nickname of secret superhero fuel for all of those benefits.

  1. Fruit or Avocados

I like to add a fruit to the smoothie for flavor and nutrients. You can add a banana, blueberries, strawberries, or an avocado to your smoothie.

  1. Ice and Water

Add a cup of water and a handful of ice to your smoothie to keep it from becoming too thick. This will make it much easier to drink.

  1. Flax or Chia seed

A tablespoon of either chia or flax seed will add a high level of Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are great for a wide range of health benefits and reduce inflammation within the body.

The above smoothie recipe takes about 5 minutes to make and is packed full of essential nutrients. It will give you more mental clarity, more energy, and better health. You can mix up the fruit to get a different flavor each day. If you enjoyed this breakfast idea, please share it with your friends and family!

Sensory Processing Disorder and Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Care

Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. It is becoming a more common diagnosis in children. Sensory processing disorders are commonly associated with children on the Autism Spectrum. In this article, I want to discuss new research regarding the relationship between Parasympathetic Nervous System function and Sensory Processing Disorder.

What does the research say?

Several recent research studies done by OT’s and PT’s have found that Parasympathetic Nervous System activity is an important regulator of reactivity in children. In other words, the studies wanted to measure Parasympathetic Nervous System function in children with Sensory Processing Disorder and compare it to the function in typically developing children.

One study measured Parasympathetic Nervous System activity at rest, with 8 different sensory stimuli, recovery, and a prolonged auditory stimulus. The results from the study showed that children with severe Sensory Processing Disorder demonstrated a low resting Parasympathetic Nervous System activity compared to typically developing children.

The study also concluded that children with Sensory Processing Disorder had significantly poorer adaptive behavior in communication and daily living activities compared to typically developing children. This study clearly shows that Parasympathetic Nervous System activity could be a biomarker for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder.

Here is a link to the research article for those that would like to read it.

How can we measure Parasympathetic Nervous System activity?

In our office we measure the function of the Parasympathetic Nervous System through Heart Rate Variability. Heart Rate Variability measures the variation in time interval between heartbeats. A low Heart Rate Variability indicates increased Sympathetic Nervous System activity or decreased Parasympathetic Nervous System activity.

How can we improve Heart Rate Variability?

Improving Heart Rate Variability will increase Parasympathetic Nervous System activity. This is something that we must do in kids with Sensory Processing Disorders. The following things will improve your HRV:

  • Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments
  • Clean Eating (removing dairy, gluten, processed foods)
  • Adequate Sleep
  • Regular Exercise
  • Green Tea
  • Deep, Slow Breathing
  • Listening to classical music
  • Fish Oil Supplement

In previous articles, I go into detail how Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments can improve Heart Rate Variability and improve Parasympathetic Nervous System Activity. You can search through my previous articles to read more about it.

If you are a mother with a child that has been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder or know a mother that has a child with SPD, please share this article. This research supports Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care for children with Sensory Processing Disorder. In fact, it may be the missing link to seeing the maximum improvement for your child.

Can Structural Alignment Negatively Affect the Brain?

Many people associate conventional chiropractic care with neck pain and back pain. Most conventional chiropractors do a great job at getting people out of pain or reducing pain. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the structural alignment of the spine can influence the function of the brain. As a neuro-structural chiropractor my focus is more than just pain relief, it is assessing and correcting structural shifts of the spine that may be causing distorted messages to the brain. In this article, I would like to discuss the science behind a neuro-structural chiropractic and how we can influence the function of the brain.

  1. Dys-Kinesia

Dys-Kinesia is fancy word meaning dysfunction with movement. This is the first part to influencing the brain. When the spine shifts from its normal, stable structural alignment, it becomes stuck or moves improperly. This shift from the normal structural alignment can be due to some sort of physical trauma like a car accident, slip or fall, or even poor posture and long hours of sitting. This dys-kinesia could even start at birth for most people. The birth process is a physical trauma to a newborn baby without developed musculature. Studies have shown in a normal vaginal birth, about 60-80 pounds of pressure is exerted to the upper neck area (think brainstem) of the spine.

  1. Dys-Afferentation

The structural shift of the spine and improper movement (dys-kinesia) lead to another fancy word called Dys-Afferentation. Joints of the spine are loaded with special sensors called proprioceptors and nociceptors. Proprioceptors sense proper joint movement and position. Nociceptors sense when there is dysfunction within the joint. In other words, proprioceptors send calming signals to the brain letting the brain know everything is working properly. Nociceptors send stressful signals to the brain letting the brain know something is wrong. Nociceptors can sometimes cause the physical sensation of pain, but not always.

When the spine shifts and improper movement within the spine occurs, proprioceptors decrease their signals to the brain and nociceptors increase their signals to the brain. In simpler words, the number of calming signals to the brain decrease while the number of stressful signals to the brain increase.

  1. Dys-Autonomia

Dys-Autonomia means that there is dysfunction within the Autonomic Nervous System. Your Autonomic Nervous System has two branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic. Think of your Autonomic Nervous System as the operating system of your body. It is to your body what iOS is to an Apple Phone or tablet. Think of your sympathetic nervous system as the gas pedal and your parasympathetic nervous system as the brake pedal.

CNS balance

Lack of proper movement leads to less calming signals to the brain and more stressful signals to the brain which leads to the Autonomic Nervous System being stuck in a Sympathetic (gas pedal) dominant state.

What does this mean?

This process can cause more than just pain, it can lead to dysfunction with your Autonomic Nervous System, or the operating system of your body. This decreases the ability of your body to adapt to stress and heal properly.

In our office, we measure how far your spine has shifted from normal and if it is affecting the operating system (nervous system) of your body. Our goal is to get your out of pain but also get your body functioning at a proper level.

Common Conditions

We see a wide range of conditions come through our office. We can help the people with conventional chiropractic symptoms like neck pain, back pain, and headaches. We also can help children that get sick constantly, have developmental issues, or sensory disorders.

Our goal is not to treat the condition, but to remove the spinal dysfunction and get the operating system of your body functioning at its peak potential. Many of our patients experience an improvement in their energy levels, mood, immune system, and overall quality of life with our care.

Many times, our bodies adapt to pain. That pain is a warning sign that dysfunction is present. Just because the pain is gone does not mean that the structural shift and effect on the brain is gone. Would you rather have a back problem or a brain problem? I think most would agree on a back problem. Remember your back problem could also be a brain problem.

Sarasota Chiropractor Discusses Where Headaches Come From

Headaches can be a tricky condition for many health professionals. There are many different types of headaches like tension, migraines, sinus, cluster, cervicogenic, and hypertensive headaches. Many times, people have multiple types of headaches, which makes it even more complicated. In some part, the type of headache you are having is determined by the anatomy that is generating the pain signal. In this article, I want to talk about causes of primary headaches or headaches caused by something outside of the brain itself. These headaches do not include causes like tumors, strokes, or other pathologies.

What structures can cause a headache?

  1. Arteries in the brain

Through science and research, we know that many migraines are caused by arteries in the brain that swell and lead to inflammation of the nerves that are connected to the artery. The nerve endings connected to the artery then transmit to the trigeminal ganglion causing the pain portion of the headache. Drugs used to treat migraines reduce the swelling of these brain arteries.

  1. Upper Neck Nerve Roots

When a head or neck injury occurs, like a whiplash or concussion, it can irritate the top 3 nerves in your spine and generate pain across the back and top of the head. It can also lead to occipital neuralgia, a condition that causes constant severe pain or numbness in the skull.

  1. Head and Neck Muscles

Tension type headaches are often caused by the muscles of the head and the neck. Muscles like the splenius capitus can generate pain that refers into the head. The jaw muscles also can cause pain. TMJ patients also usually have headache issues as well.

  1. Meninges

The meninges are a soft tissue structure that surrounds the brain, spinal, cord, and nerves. We know that the meninges can cause headaches because of a condition called meningitis. Most have heard that meningitis is a serious condition. Inflammation and infection occurs in the meninges during meningitis and a common symptom in meningitis is a terrible headache.

  1. Spinal Joint Dysfunction

The last cause of a headache can be joint dysfunction in the neck. Joints of the neck are responsible for postural feedback to the brain. Cervicogenic headaches are typically due to dysfunctional neck joints.

What do these structures have in common?

It all comes down to a bundle of nerves called the trigeminal complex. It is the hub for almost all pain signals of the head and neck. All the above structures get transmitted and processed by these nerves. If we can change the function of the trigeminal complex, then we can help someone’s headache disorder.

How can structural chiropractic help?

We know that when the head and neck are in the normal structural alignment, that the trigeminal complex can function properly. When a structural shift occurs in the upper neck, it can create scrambled signals into the brain and allows pain to be the dominant message. The nerves at the top of the neck can dampen pain signals and stop the headache process from even starting. Therefore, our success rate is very high in dealing with headache patients.

Why Won’t My Baby Stop Crying?

A crying baby is one of the worst things a mother wants to hear. Babies cry to communicate that they need something or something is not right. When a mother tries feeding the baby, changing them, singing to them, rocking them, and nothing seems to help; it leaves the mother stressed and feeling helpless. This can take a toll on the mother, especially when they are told that they just have a colicky baby and they have to just deal with it. In this article I want to explain what it could mean if your baby won’t stop crying and how Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care can help a colicky baby.

Could colic be caused by a structural shift?

A structural shift of the spine occurs when some sort of force shifts the spine from its natural and normal alignment. A newborn is very prone to a structural shift of the spine due to the undeveloped musculature to protect the alignment. There are two ways a structural shift can occur. It can occur from a force that is strong enough to shift the spine from its natural and neutral position or from a repetitive force in a constrained or abnormal position.

This structural shift, especially in a newborn and baby, can have huge effects on the nervous system. When a structural shift occurs, it can cause neurological obstruction or blockages in the communication between the brain and body. This leads to stress on the nervous system and thus stress on the body of the baby.

A colicky baby that won’t stop crying is often a sign that a structural shift has occurred and is causing neurological obstructions or stress on the nervous system. There are a few signs that there is stress on the nervous system. These signs include but are not limited to: a loud piercing cry, flexed legs, tensed abdominal muscles, clenched fists, and excessive/uncontrollable crying.

Could the birth process be responsible?

The birth process could be the cause of your baby’s structural shift of the neck. No matter how natural the birth process is, it still adds strain on the spine of an infant. Add in any intervention (bed rest, induction, augmentation, Pitocin, antibiotics, epdurals, continuous fetal monitoring, manual traction, vacuum/forceps/C-Section delivery, ICU, etc. ) and your baby’s spine and the system it protects, the nervous system, are effected.

The nervous system is the master controller of the body. It controls everything the body perceives and controls/regulates every process in the body. Any pressure on the nervous system, especially in the upper cervical spine (top of the neck/base of the skull), can be detrimental to a baby’s health, growth, and development.

Can Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care help?

There are many chiropractic case studies that show chiropractic care has excellent results with helping babies with colic. One study showed that 94% of babies receiving chiropractic care had an improvement of symptoms associated with colic. Another study showed an improvement in crying behavior and reduced hours spent crying compared to parents that just tried to wait out to colic.

Our goal is not to treat the colic. Our goal is to assess the baby for a structural shift of the spine that could be contributing to the colicky symptoms. If a structural shift is found, a gentle correction is made to the spine. This removed obstruction to the nervous system and allows it to function properly.

Of course, a detailed consultation is needed to see if neuro-structural chiropractic care is needed. In the consultation, we find out as much information about the mother’s pregnancy and birth experience as possible. After the consultation, an examination is performed to find the structural shifts. The exam involves observing the baby for asymmetries in their structure and function and assessing the overall tone of the body. Neurological tests and findings will indicate if any obstruction to the nervous system is present and how severe it is.

There are natural, safe, and effective options out there for your baby. If you have tried everything and your baby will not stop crying, have them examined by a neuro-structural chiropractor that is trained in pediatrics. Colic can be an indicator of a neuro-structural problem. If the underlying cause of the colic is covered up with medication or other treatment, the problem will still remain and could show up later in the baby’s life.

Adaptability, How Well Does Your Body Adapt to Stress?

The definition of adaptability is the ability to adjust oneself readily to different conditions. When we look at the word adaptability and how it relates to stress, the definition is how well your body adjusts to different stressors in its environment. Health is all about adaptability. When our bodies cannot adapt properly to different stressors from the environment, break down/sickness/disease occurs. In this article I would like to discuss how adaptability affects our health and how neuro-structural chiropractic care can help us adapt better to our environment.

Adaptability and the nervous system

Dr. Hans Selye, a pioneer of modern stress research, explains that our ability to adapt to stress is managed by our nervous system. We are naturally born with a wide range of adaptability, but as time progresses and we are exposed to more and more stressors, the body’s range of adaptability becomes more narrow.

Think of a ship sailing through a storm. The storm is the stress. The ship needs to withstand the wind, rain, waves, etc. In other words, it needs to adapt to the weather change. If the stressors are too powerful, the ship will sink.

Often times we may be aware that our ship (body) is struggling to stay afloat. The secondary conditions or symptoms that we are experiencing are warning signs that something is not right. The underlying problem is that we are not adapting properly. The symptoms may be pain or high blood pressure, but the underlying cause is the constant stressor put on the body.

Adaptability and neuro-structural chiropractic

A neuro-structural shift occurs when the normal alignment of the spine shifts into an abnormal position or alignment. This abnormal structural alignment causes decreased motion of your spine, which then leads to altered function of your nervous system. In other words, the neuro-structural shift is a constant stressor put on your body.

Your body’s resistance to stress can only last so long before it becomes fatigued and exhaustion sets in. Your body is no longer able to adapt to that stressor. This results in your body expressing secondary conditions or symptoms. Neuro-Structural shifts of the spine can lead to secondary conditions like chronic pain, chronic fatigue, disc issues, and decreased immune function.

As a neuro-structural chiropractor, I focus on removing the neuro-structural shifts of your spine. We direct your body’s spine back towards its normal, natural alignment. This allows the body and nervous system to function better and to adapt to its environment better.

How can we measure adaptability?

In our office we use technology that measures the autonomic Operating System or aOS. Think of your autonomic Operating System (aOS) as the equivalent of your apple product’s operating system iOS. Your aOS controls and regulates everything within your body.

Our technology measures the function of this system. When this system is low, this means that your body is unable to adapt to stressors properly and that you are headed for poor health and different secondary conditions. If you aOS is high, this means that it is adapting properly and that you are headed towards a healthier state.

We continually evaluate this aOS throughout the process of your care. When we get this aOS functioning correctly, we often see many secondary conditions reduce in severity and even disappear. I hope this article opened your mind to thinking of your health as your body’s ability to adapt. Our bodies are amazing structures and are capable of self-healing or self-adapting, we just have to remove the stressors and increase the function.

Tylenol Use During Pregnancy and Behavior Problems-Is There a Link?

Tylenol is currently listed as a safe drug/medication to take during pregnancy. With the increased weight that a mother has to carry around while pregnant, pain and other issues usually follow. This leads to mom popping a couple Tylenol or other pain killers. In this article, I want to talk about a recent study that found a correlation to Tylenol use during pregnancy and behavior problems in the child later in life.
What does a recent study say?
The journal of JAMA Pediatrics recently published a study linking Tylenol use during pregnancy and future behavioral problems, like ADHD, in the child. More and more research is being done to find out if taking over-the-counter pain medications while pregnant can have an effect on the child. The study found that mothers taking Tylenol AKA Acetaminophen were more likely to have children with behavioral problems like ADHD. Researchers did note that Tylenol use during pregnancy is not unsafe. This still raises questions for pregnant mothers looking for relief.

Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care during pregnancy
There are other drug-free and non-invasive forms of pain relief out there for pregnant women. Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care is arguably a safe and better option for pregnant women experiencing pain. It can not only improve aches and pains, but also help reduce nausea, heartburn, fatigue, and sleep issues. Neuro-Structural Chiropractic care also ensures that the pelvis and hips are balanced, which reduces muscular and ligamentous tension in the uterus to help ensure a smooth birth.
Many of our pregnant mothers report more comfortable pregnancies and easier births. This greatly reduces the need to take any over the counter pain medications like Tylenol. Any type of medication taken by the mother while pregnant can still have an effect on the baby and its development. Most research studies look to see if any medications cause birth defects. These are things we can see right away. Research is now being done to see if these medications cause any long-term issues.

What is the perfect storm?
Once a month, our office hosts a perfect storm workshop. This is a free workshop of parents looking for answers on why childhood illnesses are on the rise. In this workshop we talk about three different stressors on the body coming together to create The Perfect Storm.
Toxins is one of these three different stressors. Man-made medications are toxic to the body and the body must work to detox and eliminate it from the blood-stream. This is just one of many toxic things that are children are being exposed to. These toxins have a cumulative effect.
If you want to learn more about the cause of childhood illness, our next Perfect Storm workshop will be held at our office on Wednesday October 12.

5 Reasons Why You Should Think Twice About a C-Section that is Not Medically Necessary

C-section deliveries are a very common procedure in our culture. One in three mothers gives birth by a C-Section delivery. We are seeing more and more people scheduling cesareans for non-medical reasons. They are convenient for both mom and the OB, but could they be causing harm to your little one and increasing the health problems associated with a cesarean? In this article I will tell you 5 things that the evidence is showing us about cesareans.

  1. Increased risk of breathing difficulties at birth and as a child

Contractions during the normal labor process help prepare the baby’s lungs for respiration at birth. A scheduled C-section without normal labor is more likely to make it more difficult for the baby to initially breathe on its own. Newborns with respiratory distress syndrome are hospitalized for an average of 25.7 days.

It also increases the risk of developing asthma at a later time. Studies in Norway and the Netherlands have found that children that are delivered via C-section are at an increased risk of developing asthma. These studies tied it to certain intestinal bacteria in babies’ guts that was found with Cesarean born babies.

  1. Delays Breastfeeding

Medications used for C-section birth can have a negative effect on breastfeeding. These medications and procedures can affect the newborn’s behavior and in turn affect its ability to suckle in an organized and effective manner. If breastfeeding is an issue, consult a lactation consultant immediately. The breastmilk, especially right after birth, are crucial for the baby receiving the right number of nutrients.

  1. Attachment is delayed

One of the most amazing things for the mother and baby at the time of birth, is the instant connection that they make when the mother holds the newborn to her chest immediately after birth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends skin- to -skin contact between the mother and baby as soon as possible and for at least one hour after the birth. There are many health benefits for the baby for this instant skin-to-skin contact.

A national survey showed that only 14% of mothers who gave birth by c-section had their baby in their arms immediately after birth. Most cesarean babies are taken to the nursery for observation and monitoring due to the increased risk of potential problems.

  1. Increases the risk of death

In a stunning study done in 2006, researchers found that newborns born via C-Section had almost three times the risk of death within the first four weeks of birth. This is a very important statistic and one that you should be informed about before just planning a C-section for convenience.

  1. Risk of a sprain in the neck

A C-section and/or forceps delivery puts forces of 60-80 pounds of traction on the newborn’s upper neck. This is considered normal by medical standards. According to a medical researcher, 80 pounds of force produced spinal cord hematoma and 120 pounds caused decapitation. The newborn doesn’t have the developed musculature yet, and this amount of force can cause a structural shift of the upper neck, right at the level of the brainstem. We all know that the brainstem is a very important structure for controlling many different functions. The normal amount of force in a c-section is the equivalent to strapping 50 pounds to your newborns feet and lifting them up by the head.

c-section birth

Through my study and education, I have learned the importance of getting your newborn checked for a structural shift of the upper neck and checking the function of the nervous system. Many mothers out there do not know the risks associated with C-section. It is crucial that you at least have your child examined by a neuro-structural chiropractor if they were born via C-Section or forceps.

There are a few warning signs that your child’s upper neck was injured during the birth process. They include: torticollis, difficulty nursing, colic, sleep issues, and reflux/constipation. The conventional medical approach is to treat these symptoms and not address the cause. This could be covering up a major issue that could affect your child’s development.

In closing, I will say that not all Cesareans deliveries are avoidable. Finding an OB that takes a hands off approach until an emergency situation arises is the best advice that I can give expectant mothers. Scheduling a Cesarean for you and your doctor’s convenience is not recommended. The biggest take away is this: if your child needed a delivery with intervention (c-section, forceps) then please do them a favor and get them checked by a neuro-structural chiropractor. The earlier you get them checked and the issue corrected, the better off your developing child will be.
